Ghana president outlines policy plans ahead of December election

Ghanaian President John Mahama outlined on Tuesday the ruling party's plans for the next four years in a bid to establish policy credibility ahead of what is expected to be a tight general election in December.

The speech delivered before the launch of the National Democratic Congress' manifesto on Saturday contained few of the attacks on the opposition New Patriotic Party that might have been expected given the audience of party faithful.

Russian hackers leak Simone Biles and Serena Williams files

The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) has condemned Russian hackers for leaking confidential medical files of star US Olympic athletes.

Athletes affected include tennis players Venus and Serena Williams and teenage gymnast Simone Biles.

A group calling itself "Fancy Bears" claimed responsibility for the hack of a Wada database.

After the leak, Ms Biles said she had long been taking medicine for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

The hacker group had accused her of taking an "illicit psycho-stimulant", but she said she had "always followed the rules".

Colin Powell Calls Trump ‘a National Disgrace’ in Leaked Emails

Washington (AP) -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, in newly leaked emails, criticized both major presidential candidates, calling Donald Trump "a national disgrace" and lamenting Hillary Clinton's attempt to equate her email practices with his.

The emails were first reported by Buzzfeed News late Tuesday. Powell, a respected retired general who served under Republican presidential administrations, told BuzzFeed that he does not deny the emails' authenticity. In a subsequent statement to NBC News, Powell said "the hackers have a lot more" of his emails.

Edward Snowden seeks pardon from Barack Obama, arguing leaks were 'vital' and 'moral'

Edward Snowden, the former intelligence contractor who leaked thousands of highly classified documents which revealed the scale of US and British surveillance, has made an 11th hour pitch to Barack Obama to grant him a presidential pardon before leaving office.

Snowden, whose disclosures included the revelation that the US National Security Agency was collecting "metadata" on Americans' phone calls, is living in exile in Moscow, and would face up to 30 years in prison for alleged violations of the Espionage Act if he returned to the US.

EC releases updated Electoral Calendar

Accra, Sept. 12, GNA - The Electoral Commission (EC), has released an updated version of its electoral calendar with a plan to recruit election officials from next week.

On the calendar, the EC would be accepting nominations from presidential and parliamentary candidates on September 29 - September, 30.

The Presidential candidates are to pay as GH₵ 50,000 filing fee while GH₵ 10,000 is to be paid by parliamentary aspirants as filing fees.

Ghana Police Service identifies over 5000 flashpoints ahead of 2016 elections

The Ghana Police Service says it has identified over five thousand potential flash point in the forthcoming elections which must be managed to prevent any form of violence.

The Director General of the Police Criminal Investigations Department, Proper Kwame Ablorh made the observation on behalf of the Inspector General at a national Colloquium on peaceful elections organized by the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre (KAIPTC).

IMF concludes review meeting with Ghana, but outstanding questions remain

A team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced conclusion of a third review meeting with the government of Ghana.

In a press statement copied to ghanabusinessnews.com, the IMF said a team led by Joël Toujas-Bernaté, visited Accra from August 29 to September 2, 2016 to continue discussions on the third review of Ghana’s financial and economic programme supported by the IMF’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

Agalga denies lobbying Martey to chair Peace Council

The Ministry of Interior has rejected claims that Deputy Minister, James Agalga, attempted to lure outgoing Moderator of the Presbyterian Church Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, to take up the position of chairman of the National Peace Council.

Martey in chronicling series of attempts made at buying his conscience to stop criticizing the government, said that in one of such instances, James Agalga made a phone call to him asking him to make himself available to chair the council, as he was assured of the ministry’s support.
