Minority predicts more taxes in 2019 budget

Ahead of the 2019 budget presentation in Parliament on Thursday, November 15, the Minority is predicting that the government will introduce new taxes.

These new taxes, according to the Minority Spokesperson on Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, will be the Finance Ministry's solution to bridging the gaping fiscal deficit.

KNUST re-opens Friday Nov 16 after new members joined 'old' Council

Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) will return to campus on Friday November 16, 2018 and academic work will start on Monday November 19, 2018.

This follows the swearing in of new members of the Governing Council of the university on Tuesday..

The Chancellor of the university, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has set up a five-member committee to be headed by a judge to investigate what led to the impasse.

Waiting until 2019 to construct footbridges too far – Adentan resident

A resident of Madina-Adentan is unhappy with a 2019 timeline given by the Ghana Highways Authority for the construction of bridges on the Madina-Adentan highway.

Selorm Brantie who is a member of the residents association is unimpressed with the assurance by GHA.

He said one year is too long a time and that more people would have died by that time.

According to him, the time to act is now to save lives since one life is one too many to lose.

Akufo-Addo approves creation of Anlo District by Executive Order

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has signed the Executive Instrument for the creation Anlo District out of the Keta Municipality, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, Kofi Dzamesi, has said.

According to Kofi Dzamesi, this singular move to create a District for the Anlo Constituency would help accelerate development in the area.

The President, he added, has also signed another Executive Instrument to declare Keta, a harbour enclave, reiterating the President's commitment to delivering on his campaign promise to build a harbour in Keta.

Parliament approves Oppong Nkrumah, 5 others as ministers

Parliament has approved the nomination of Kojo Oppong Nkrumah as the Information Minister.

Brong Ahafo Regional Minister Evans Opoku Bobie, Gender Minister Cynthia Morrison, Upper East Regional Minister Paulina Abayage, and two other Deputy Ministers have also been approved by the House.

Their approval follows a successful vetting by Parliament’s Appointment Committee last week and its recommendation for all the nominees to be approved.

Aviation Minister, Kofi Ada praised the Ofoase-Ayirebi MP for his brilliant answers to questions asked during the vetting.

George Andah involved in car crash, flown to Accra

Deputy Communications Minister, George Andah is reported to have been involved in car crash Saturday.

Reports say Mr. Andah’s vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle in the Awutu Senya West Constituency where he represents in Parliament.

Myjoyonline.com understands Mr. Andah, who together with three others, sustained serious injury, have been airlifted to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for emergency care.

Kwabena Duffour sues BoG over uniBank license revocation

Dr Kwabena Duffour, a shareholder of the defunct uniBank Ghana Limited, has initiated a fight to reclaim uniBank, which the Bank of Ghana (BoG) on August 1, 2018, collapsed along with four other banks on grounds of insolvency.

The Bank of Ghana on August 1, 2018 merged five banks into a Consolidated Bank of Ghana Limited with the explanation that, investigations had established that the five banks were insolvent.

The banks are BEIGE, Sovereign, Construction, uniBank and Royal.

BoG fails to do broader consultation on banks recapitalisation - Prof. Gatsi

Accra, Aug. 8, GNA - Professor John Gatsi, the Head of Finance Department, University of Cape Coast, on Tuesday said the Bank of Ghana (BoG) failed to undertake broader stakeholder consultations before starting the indigenous banks’ recapitalisation exercise.

He said the Central Bank should have engaged in transparent and active debate involving bankers, policy-makers, politicians and other key stakeholders in the banking industry to ensure an alternative policy direction.

AMERI saga: Minority want Bediatuo sacked

The Minority in Parliament is demanding that the President sacks his Executive Secretary, Nana Asante Bediatuo, over the controversial revised AMERI deal that has led to the firing of Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko.

They have also called on the police to institute a criminal probe into the processes that led to the review of the deal that was initially signed by the previous John Mahama administration.

Parliament last month froze approval processes for the agreement following concerns the new deal will cost the country about a billion dollars more.

Double-track removes pressure to secure GH¢1bn for infrastructure dev't – Education Minister

The Minister of Education, Mathew Opoku Prempeh, says the double-track system, which government intends to roll out in September this year at the Senior High School (SHS) level, will save the nation at least a billion Ghana cedis.

He suggests that although the government will eventually spend money to expand infrastructure to deal with the challenges brought on by the free SHS policy, the double-track system will, for instance, remove the pressure to rush through obtaining the funds and putting up school buildings.

Time, he said, is not on government's side.

Dismissing Energy Minister right decision – VRA union leader

President Akufo-Addo’s dismissal of Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko late Monday evening over the controversial renegotiated Ameri power deal, has been hailed as an inevitable decision.

Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, Vice Chairman of the Volta River Authority (VRA) Senior Staff Association, says the decision does not surprise them given that the Energy Minister failed to engage key stakeholders including the VRA in renegotiating the deal. He also spurned all good counsel to renegotiate for a value for money deal.

The statement said the President wished Mr Agyarko well in future endeavours.
