President nominates MCEs, appoints presidential staffer

Accra, March 10, GNA - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday nominated four personalities for appointment as metropolitan chief executives.

They are Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, Accra Metroplitian Assembly, Mr Idrrisu Musah, Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, Mr Anthony K.K. Sam, Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, and Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

Their appointment is subject to the approval of their respective assemblies, a statement issued from the Office of the President, said.

Hedging Ghana’s crude oil could be dangerous – Dr. Manteaw

An outspoken member of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), Dr. Steve Manteaw has cautioned Ghana’s crude oil managers against hedging the product at the international markets.

He explained that the risks associated with such practice could shortchange the nation’s petroleum revenue.

He thus called for a price stabilization mechanism in tandem with transparency provisions enshrined in the nation’s petroleum laws.

Banking crisis to hit Ghana

There is a looming banking crisis in Ghana, unless the government and central bank take the right steps and decisions, following economic decline by the end of 2016.

The ratings agency, Moody’s issued a report in February 2017, indicating that Ghana banks in addition to the problems of non-performing loans, are facing high asset risks.

Moody’s pointed out that the banks are facing these risks, despite solid capital buffers, stable funding and an economic recovery expected in the country.

EXIM Bank gets new CEO

President Nana Akufo Addo has appointed Mr. Lawrence Agyinsam as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Export Import (EXIM) Bank.

His appointment is however pending receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the governing board of the Bank and in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

A letter signed by President Akufo Addo on the appointment said, “Pursuant to Section 18 (1) of the Ghana Export-Import Bank Act, 2006 (ACT 911), I hereby appoint you to act as the CEO of the Ghana Export Import Bank.”

‘A politician who doesn’t generate controversy is dull’ – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described as “expected” the controversy generated by his 60th-anniversary speech delivered Monday.

He argued a political figure who does not incite debates with his actions or speeches is an uninteresting one.

“Everything I say...ended up in controversy but that’s how it should be,” he told a gathering at the Ghana Unity Ball on Thursday.

Article 50 'could be triggered on Tuesday' if Brexit bill passes

Theresa May could trigger article 50, the formal process for leaving the European Union, as early as Tuesday if the Brexit bill passes late on Monday, government sources say.

The legislation, which passed through the House of Commons unamended, is due to be debated by MPs on Monday. They will have to decide whether to accept a pair of amendments added by peers – on the rights of European Union citizens and granting parliament a meaningful vote at the end of the process.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Bolga Central, Isaac Adongo, has said the NDC will emerge much stronger in 2020, despite its painful defeat in the 2016 general elections.

According to him, not even the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “lies and propaganda” can sustain the electorates’ interest and confidence in the party in the 2020 elections.

World faces greatest humanitarian crisis since 1945, UN warns

The world faces the largest humanitarian crisis since the UN was founded in 1945, with more than 20 million people in four countries facing starvation and famine, the UN humanitarian chief has said.

Stephen O'Brien told the UN Security Council that "without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death" and "many more will suffer and die from disease."

He urged an immediate injection of funds for Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia and northeast Nigeria plus safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid "to avert a catastrophe."

Unpaid teachers threaten to boycott classes

A group of teachers known as the Coalition of Newly Recruited Graduate Teachers of Ghana have threatened to boycott classes over the non-payment of their salaries.

The group, which comprises Science, Mathematics, English and Geography teachers in various Senior High Schools in the country say government has not paid their salaries over the last seven months.

A statement issued by the group and copied to citifmonline.com said they had gone through the necessary procedures to ensure their payments are made, however, the money has not been forthcoming.

Apostolic Nunciature marks 40 years’ diplomatic relations with Ghana.

The Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana last Friday held a reception to commemorate its 40 years of diplomatic relations with Ghana.

In attendance were members of the Diplomatic Corps, former President Jerry John John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, traditional rulers, as well as Papal knights and dames.

Ghana Mulls Doubling Capacity of Planned Second Oil Refinery

The operator of Ghana’s sole oil refinery said the planned capacity of a proposed second plant could be doubled as the West African nation targets exports to neighboring countries.

Tema Oil Refinery will complete studies next year to build a 200,000 barrel-a-day plant in the port city, 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of the capital, Accra, Managing Director Isaac Osei said in an interview. Output at the existing 45,000 barrel-a-day plant has been slashed by an explosion at its crude distillation unit in January.

France, Ghana moving forward together

The French Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Francois Pujolas, has congratulated the government and people of Ghana on the occasion of the celebration of the country’s 60th independence anniversary which falls today and said the day also marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He said France and Ghana had cooperated along various areas and would further deepen the friendship in such areas as economic/trade which must be sustainable, security/terrorism, climate change, culture/language, tourism, educational and health, among others.

Nana Addo’s 1st state of the nation address [Full Text]

President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, presented his first state of the nation address to Parliament in accordance with Article 67 of the Constitution.

The President touched on issues ranging from the economy, education, health and energy among others.

Despite painting a gloomy picture of the economy as bequeathed to him from the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC), the President said he would ensure that the Ghanaian economy does not collapse under his watch.

President Akufo- Addo’s address attracts mixed reactions

Accra, Feb 21, GNA - The maiden State of the Nation Address, delivered by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to Parliament, on Tuesday, in Accra has attracted mixed reactions.

While some on the side of the Majority praised the President for a brilliant, inspiring and hopeful delivery, some on the Minority criticised the address, describing as lacking substance, and rather a repetition of old ideas.

The delivery of the State of the Nation Address is in fulfilment of a constitutional requirement for the President to address Parliament at the beginning of a new session.

Parliament’s image dips due to bribery allegation - Report

Accra, Feb. 21, GNA - Parliament has suffered a major blow to its public image due largely to its recent appointments committee bribery allegations, a report by the Centre for Media Analysis (CMA), an independent media monitoring agency, said on Tuesday.
The report, compiled through CMA’s strategic analysis of print media news contents, called on the leadership of the august house and its communication managers to put strategic and pragmatic measures in place to re-affirm its renowned respect and image.

Opuni’s assets frozen; EOCO probes his tenure at COCOBOD

Immediate past Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Stephen Opuni, has had his assets including his accounts, frozen by the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO), according to Citi News sources at the presidency.

Although reasons for the seizure have not been officially communicated, the sources have hinted Citi News that EOCO is seeking to investigate the entire period that Dr. Opuni served as CEO of that critical state agency.
